Lexi on iPhone

Most of the pediatricians that I know bounce away when they realize that the price for the Lexi Pediatric Suite is $179. They must be saying why should we buy such an expensive app while we can have Epocrates and Skyscape for free on the iPhone.

Here’s the answer;

The Lexi Pediatric Suite is unlike Epocrates, Skyscape, or Unbound Medicine, is offered straight away. You pay for the app and you get all the contents with regular updates. While in the case of other developers, they don’t provide full contents, they just tempt you with a free summarized app on which you have to download and purchase the content from their respective websites. So for example if you want to have a fully functional Epocrates Essentials you’d have to pay $150 yearly subscription and similarly with the other developers.

So that’s why Lexi priced in that range. But someone might argue that this a bad marketing idea, they should provide a free “lite” app to let users get an idea and convince them to pay for the full fledged app.

Here’s how the iPhone’s Lexi Pediatric Suite looks like;

The sweet suite sports the following:

To have all these resources packaged in a single app and an easy to use interface it makes sense to pay that $179.

The Lexi Pediatric Suite is a serious app and the details are scrutinized and synchronized with the Lexi database which is trusted nation wide.

Recently there were two important enhancements to this app:

First; they added the household products database and Lab database which were not there initially, this is probably in response to our request posted previously on the Pediatric PDA Blog!

Second; they added an update function so that we can update the database right within the app and no need to wait for app update from iTunes. This was one of the glitches that we recorded in the initial version.

You can open the purchase page of the app in iTunes when you click on the icon below

Thank you Lexi for such a great app.

$50 off the Lexi Pediatric Suite

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Lexi is offering $50 off their pediatric suite which is regularly priced @ $175 and now it’s $125.

The pediatric Lexi Suite is one of the most complete solutions [which was recently updated with new databases] that we can have for our handhelds; read Pda4peds review and our previous blog post for further details.

Lexi Offer

Using the above code while checking out will grant the $50 off.

Note that this does not include the iPhone version as it is solely offered in iTunes app store and codes do not work there, This offer is only valid for Palm, Pocket PC, and Blackberry platforms. Also it is not site wide, this code is specific for the pediatric and some other suites.

Lexi-Comp updated their Pediatric Suite

Monday, February 9th, 2009

In a previous post we mentioned that the missing features from the Lexi Pediatric Suite are their diagnostic and lab tool and the Lexi-Tox

Lexi Pediatric Suite Updated

It seems that they responded to our wishes and they promptly added the missing databases for the same subscription price. Not only that but they even added Household Products to the list, a database that is most needed by people caring for children.

And thankfully, they also updated the iPhone app to include the new databases so that there will be no discrepancy between the platforms.

Lexi Pediatric Suite Updated

If you have Lexi on your Palm or Windows Mobile you need to update your database via their JAVA based Lexi Connect and if you have it on your iPhone / iPod Touch then you just accept that new update shown above.

Thank you Lexi for listening to us.

Lexi Pediatric Suite

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Just another great pediatric resource for the PDA provided from the makers of The Pediatric Dosage Handbook
The Lexi Pediatric Suite
sports a collection of a drug reference, drug interaction tool, 5 minutes pediatric consult, poisoning and toxicology, and a number of clinical calculators.

The suite is offered for $175 per year and the reason for the yearly subscription is that it is not a static reference but rather a constantly updated database of drugs at a fairly frequent rate.

The Lexi database of drugs is one of the most trusted resources so that even the AAP’s Pediatric Care Online and UpToDate depends on it.

The software is installed and updated via a Java based desktop component named Lexi Connect.

Lexi Connect

The interface shows us what database we are subscribed to and whether it has been changed or not so that we know when to update. Although this is fairly easy to use but it could have been much easier if it was from the in-device software with wireless connection and let’s hope they will add this in future upgrades.

What’s missing from the Pediatric Suite is a lab reference and this could have been overcome by adding the Lexi-Lab and Diagnostic Procedures and if this is done the Lexi Pediatric Suite will be a serious competitor of the Epocrates Essentials.

The suite interface is equipped with keyword search that can be executed across all installed books and tools so for example you can search for a drug in the 5 minutes, the drug database, the toxicology, and the interaction tool.

The poisoning and toxicology reference is consistent with their huge database and arguably contains the longest list of chemical and compounds ever available for the handheld. However, it is missing some practical common index words read review for further details.

The Lexi-Interact and Lexi-Calc do not install themselves within the main Lexi reader but as separate files and so they need to be closed separately on Windows Mobile platform but that’s not a great deal and it’s OK.

Lexi-Comp also offers the same features Online for yearly subscription and so not only on handheld but also desktop access is available.

Bottom line; this is great all-in-one application that is extremely useful in clinical pediatrics and if you like it enough you may vote for it in The Best All in One Application Poll.
