All these are about checking the adequacy of
compensation whether in acidosis or in alkalosis
and whether it is the bicarb or the PaCO2.
The prime example of these is the Winter formula
(See Pics 1 and 2) which will tell us whether there is adequate
hyperventilation (hence low PaCO2 and respiratory
alkalosis) to compensate for the low bicarb (metabolic acidosis).
The reverse is true in checking the adequacy
of compensation for metabolic alkalosis (See Pics 3 and 4).
Another two formulas work on the bicarb and
see if it is adequately compensating for
acute or chronic respiratory acidosis
(Pics 5 and 6) and alkalosis (No Pics).

One of the useful calculators embedded in Skyscape Archimedes is a collection
of calculators that help in studying the Arterial Blood Gas analysis results.
This is a package of six calculators that attempt at estimating the adequate
compensation by bicarb or CO2 for alkalosis or acidosis whether acute or
chronic.
Extremely useful at the bedside when we get puzzled with some abnormal
results of mixed respiratory and metabolic acid base disturbances.
No such calculators seen in any other program.
